The un-level field in America
Tuesday, January 17th, 2012Most of the Americans believe that they live in a land of meritocracy. But they do not know that in America your economic growth depends on your parents. Those born in the lower rungs have the least chance to climb to the top or even to the middle. The government falls down on the job of creating equal opportunity to its people. Low income mothers and their children receive little nutrition and health care. This continues when the children go to school. The affluent send their children to the best private schools while the less advantaged get a far worse education. The children from the low income group are less likely to go to college, that too the top tiered colleges. Whereas the lucky children with rich parents go to tier colleges where they are 74% and only 3% of the seats are occupied by the low income group.
Poor but bright kids hardly make it to complete their college but the dumb, rich kids got a degree. Someone interested in equality will work to give nutritional aid to low income mothers and young children. He would try to improve the quality of public schools and support the low income college students. He would support a universal health care system so that there is no need for the people to worry about medical bills. But the Republicans have made a cut in the funds to provide nutrition to low income mothers and they have also demanded cuts in Pell grants that provide support to low income students to afford college. Politicians say that they work towards equality but their actions show that they prefer a society in which you’re your station in life is determined by your parents.
