Sunday, December 20th, 2009Sleep is one of the most talked-about topics among parents. We quickly learn just how important sleep is for our wellbeing. It means the difference between a cheerful and grumpy baby, between a calm or frazzled mom and dad.
Sleep is equally vital for school aged children. A good night’s sleep sets a child up for the day. It helps kids deal with the social stresses and pressures of a busy school environment and also promotes learning. Sleep is essential for growing brains.
Children have long rebelled against bedtimes, but today there are more and more distractions to keep them awake and alert and out of bed for longer. Television, the internet, talking on the phone and playing video games all compete for their bedtime attention.
While adults may not have control over children’s biology, we can assist them by encouraging them to develop good sleep patterns. Establish a regular bedtime kids may fight this, but stick to a regular bedtime during the week. Switch off television, computer and other distractions some 45 minutes before bedtime. This helps to calm down the kids, cut down snacks and caffeine before bedtime.
A bedtime routine of a bath, brushing their teeth and sharing a bedtime story helps the kids to have a proper sleep. metal beds are healthier as, bed mites cannot grow on them. Remove television and computer from the bedroom, create a calm and dark atmosphere.
